Name gifted to the new Avondale library and community hub
The Whau Local Board were unanimous in their adoption of the name ‘Te Hono’ for Avondale’s new library and community hub at their September meeting.
Te Hono, which means ‘the connection’, recognises its role and function in the community - offering ways to connect place, people and purpose. The name was gifted by mana whenua representatives from Te Kawerau ā Maki, and supported by Te Ākitai Waiohua, Ngāti Te Ata and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
This is a place that will connect people, that will bring people together, and will be a place the whole community comes together with a shared purpose

The library and community hub will form a major part of the regeneration of the centre of Avondale and is currently in the design phase, with preliminary design complete. The adoption of the name now, will see its meaning and influence woven into the design narrative, including mahi toi (art), strengthening the cultural and community connection to the facility. Whau Local Board Chair, Kay Thomas, says that the name truly reflects the purpose of the centre. “This is a place that will connect people, that will bring people together, and will be a place the whole community comes together with a shared purpose.”
