The international cruise industry has grown phenomenally over the last 10-15 years, with Auckland benefiting greatly from such growth.

The 2014/15 cruise ship season saw Auckland welcome 92 ships carrying 188,500 passengers, injecting $190.7 million GDP into the region’s economy. By comparison, the industry has grown immensely from the 1996/97 season which saw 27 cruise ships with 19,400 passengers visit our shores.

Auckland plays a key role in the New Zealand cruise industry as the primary exchange port – where passengers embark or disembark their vessel, and where ships are re-provisioned. A cruise ship exchange delivers the vast majority of economic value to the region.

The growth has come from both a greater number of visits and the increasing size of the ships that visit. Early forecasts showed that this growth will continue and that Auckland required facilities that cater to this increasing demand.

In 2011, the Mayor of Auckland announced that Shed 10 would be refurbished to become Auckland’s primary cruise ship terminal. Construction was completed in time for the 2013/14 season.

Queens Wharf can accommodate ships up to 294 metres, with most cruise ships currently visiting Auckland between 250 and 290m long.

The first floor of Shed 10 operates as the passenger lounge, including processing and waiting area for embarking passengers and customs controlled space for border agency processing. The ground floor of Shed 10 is used for passenger luggage, security and further border agency processing.

Shed 10 is in a prime location for cruise passengers; based at the bottom of Queen Street, Shed 10 is located close to a number of popular tourism operators, a variety of shopping and dining precincts, as well as various public transport options.
