Realising the potential of the Puhinui Stream

Realising the potential of the Puhinui Stream - Manukau

A clean, healthy, flowing Puhinui Stream will realise its potential to link neighbourhoods and provide high-quality open space for all to enjoy.

Puhinui Stream is the last remaining natural asset in the area and an important link to Manukau’s cultural and ecological heritage. Restoring it would be a source of great community pride.

We’re looking to the stream project as a model of ecological, social, cultural and economic transformation.

This move includes:

  • linking destinations – completing the stream’s ‘missing link’ through the Manukau Super Clinic site, and providing better connections to Manukau Harbour and Auckland Botanic Gardens
  • beautifying Barrowcliffe Bridge and enriching the urban landscape through central Manukau
  • expanding open spaces and facilities – improving recreational and other uses of places like Hayman Park, Barrowcliffe and the botanic gardens, and creating a new wetland domain at Wiri
  • establishing an ecosystem – practising kaitiakitanga and working with local people to restore the mauri of the stream and its surrounds.
