Henderson Streets for People

Henderson Streets for People

Changes to the Trial

Over the past six weeks a project team from Eke Panuku – supported by Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency – have been trialling different ways to make Henderson’s streets safer and improve access around the town centre.

This has involved changes to the street layout to help make the area less dominated by cars, adding new pathways for cycling and walking, and using colour to add vibrancy to parts of the town centre.

Rather than install permanent features, this trial has used a ‘tactical urbanism’ approach, which allows us to test and gather feedback and, where things aren’t working, make changes during the trial.

There has been considerable feedback over the past few weeks, which has clearly identified two parts of the trial which aren’t working. We will be removing these as a priority over the next fortnight, which we hope will reduce the congestion and confusion for motorists.

The bus lane and shared path will be removed along Railside Avenue between Stevies Lane and the Great North Road intersection and returned to its original layout. We are also reopening the left turn lane from Great North Road into Henderson Valley Road and removing the temporary planter boxes.

We expect that this will take around two weeks, weather permitting. This is because it needs to be removed safely and efficiently, complying with all required approvals and road controls. We ask for your patience during this work.

The rest of the trial will remain in place so that we can continue to monitor traffic volumes and speeds, as well as feedback that will help form future planning to support the growing Henderson community.

The trial is due to finish at the end of July. At that time, we will review our findings with the Henderson-Massey Local Board and look at what, if any, parts of the trial will remain past this time.
