Westhaven Promenade wins construction award

Westhaven Promenade wins construction award

Westhaven Promenade won big at the 2020/21 HYNDS CCNZ Construction Awards on 19 June, taking home the prize for Best Project in its category. This recognition comes after several years of hard work by Eke Panuku and the project team to implement the promenade walkway within Westhaven.

Ranked by the public as the highest priority for investment during the consultation phase of the Waterfront Plan in 2011, the completion of stage two represents the finish line for the project in its entirety. Now complete, the promenade boardwalk stretches all the way from the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Wynyard Quarter, creating a scenic pathway along the water’s edge.

To win the CCNZ HYNDS Construction Award Category E for best project, the project received feedback from references about how the HEB Construction-built promenade project had excelled at construction quality, engineering, client satisfaction, safety standards and strong people-development culture, delivering a sophisticated waterfront experience.

“This award is a real honour, and I’m thrilled that the whole team has been acknowledged for their hard work,” said project manager Jeanine McMullien. “Huge thanks to HEB Construction, RCP Consulting, BECA , LandLAB and everyone involved for their work in bringing the project to life. A special thanks to the Westhaven tenants and berth holders who were so patient and understanding over the duration of the project.”

The Westhaven Promenade – stage two project features:

  • A path ideal for people walking and using active modes of transport
  • Advanced stormwater infrastructure such as rain gardens
  • Mana Whenua-led artwork by Graham Tipene of Ngāti Whātua Orākei
  • Fantastic (and Instagram-able) views

Construction of Westhaven Promenade – stage two began in 2019, stemming from the vision to make the waterfront edge a space for all people. The blessing of the project by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei took place in November 2020, with around 60 people in attendance. The completion of stage one and stage two of the promenade now offers over 1km of waterfront pathway opening Westhaven Marina up to the public.
