Northcote residents have been vocal in their desire to see their town centre revitalised. And the good news is that the time is now for Northcote.

The upgrade of the vibrant, multi-cultural town centre, led by Auckland Council-organisation Panuku Development Auckland, has taken an important step with the approval of the over-arching plan for the project.

The Council’s Development Committee last week approved a High Level Project Plan for the redevelopment which aims to improve amenities and connections between local homes and the centre, known for its great choice of food outlets and established community facilities.

Panuku Strategy and Engagement Director David Rankin says Northcote residents have been telling the Council they want to see housing and commercial developments that strengthen the community and reinforce the local character.

“Panuku is now mandated to deliver on projects that have previously been consulted on. We will review the great planning that has been done and we’ll be looking at how we deliver each of the outcomes.

“We’ll work with the Local Board and mana whenua throughout this process.”

Rankin says there is the potential for 700 new homes (affordable housing and improved social housing) based on Northcote having Special Housing Area status.

“We’ll look to work with the Government to better connect the town centre with local homes, and create a mix of housing opportunities to renew the whole area.”

Northcote residents will start to see improvements to the town centre over the next few months, says Rankin.

“Panuku was keen to deliver some quick wins on this long-term project, so we'll be working with the retailers to improve signage, tidy up external storage areas and get some licks of paint.”
