Te Komititanga – welcome to our waterfront

Te Komititanga is Auckland’s newest and largest civic space.

Created to be a place for all people to enjoy and where everyone feels welcome, Eke Panuku is now bringing the space to life.

Using our placemaking skills, honed over many years on Wynyard Quarter’s award-winning programme of events and activation, we are now trialling and testing ideas and concepts for this new space.

Over 10 months we will learn about the place and pilot a range of activities in Te Komititanga. The data we gather will be used to make a longer-term plan for how the space will be activated across the whole year. Our aim is to create interesting and appropriate diversions that will catch people’s attention and see the space loved and used by visitors and locals who live and work nearby.

Te Komititanga is a significant civic space near Auckland’s city centre waterfront located in front of Britomart Railway Station and Commercial Bay, and between Quay and Customs street.

Some of the things we are trialling include low-key busking performances, temporary furniture like the brightly coloured beach chairs, new types of signage to help people find their way around, and on-site decoration like flags and bunting to brighten the space.

Some of the considerations will be to ensure the space continues to function well as a key public transport interchange, and that it continues to be vibrant, safe and clean.

The placemaking pilot led by Eke Panuku is being run in collaboration with Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited.
