Key sites for regeneration
The key site is called Takapuna Central, and includes the current car park at 40 Anzac Street and several Hurstmere Road properties. Located in the centre of Takapuna between Anzac Street and Lake Road, next to Potters Park, it is well-placed to provide new public spaces and more direct connections between the town centre and Takapuna Beach.
On 10 July 2019, Auckland Council’s Environment and Community Committee approved the area of land across 40 Anzac Street and 38 Hurstmere Road to become new public open space.
The proposal put forward by Eke Panuku outlined recommendations for a public space of approximately 3200sqm across 40 Anzac Street and 34-38 Hurstmere Road, a location that follows the preferred outcome of the public consultation in July 2018 to connect Hurstmere and Lake roads.
Just 200m away is the second area, the 6000sqm Gasometer site on the corner of Huron, Northcroft and Auburn streets. A new car park with modern amenities for Takapuna locals and visitors was completed on the site in November 2020, while the rest is primed for high-quality development and street landscape improvements that contribute to Takapuna’s identity.
Both of these sites are owned by Auckland Council.
