Panuku Development Auckland

22 February 2016

As part of the Wynyard Quarter Smart [WQ Smart] initiative, with its focus on using data and technology to track progress towards the sustainability targets in the area, Panuku and NEC are now actively working together.

As part of that collaboration you may start seeing devices, which look a bit like rabbits with ears, fixed on a number of poles around the Wynyard Quarter.   In fact, these devices are a new Smart City innovation from NEC, invented right here in New Zealand.

The Kite Flexible Sensing platform provides the Wynyard Quarter with a ubiquitous wireless sensing network that enables any manner of sensors, such as for air quality or water quality, to be very easily and quickly connected into the WQ Smart platform.   The Kite platform is named after the Maori word ‘kite’, which translates to ‘to see’. This illustrates how this sensing platform enables initiatives, such as WQSmart, to see and truly understand its environment.  In addition to providing real time information on things like water quality, it means that the Wynyard Quarter is future proofed for any sensing projects we may want to do as a community, so we don’t have to disturb the neighbourhood with noisy and often costly civil engineering.

It also means with the deployment of sensors we can understand more about the impact we make on our environment and can support more informed decisions around sustainability and development.  One of the first projects atop of this platform will be to gain much faster, higher-quality data and awareness of the water quality in the harbour.

As this project kicks off we’ll provide updates with more details on what this project can achieve, what other projects are planned using the Kite network and how this innovation will help everyone in the community.
